This happens in Mexico City

Three activists were arrested just because they were handing out flyers about 25 innocent feral dogs captured by the government that supposedly killed 4 persons (http://www.ohmidog.com/2013/01/14/tests-have-yet-to-incriminate-mexico-city-street-dogs-in-suspected-maulings-at-park/).

The same weekend 22 people were killed by organised crime and still there are no suspects, except for the vague entity "organised crime" (http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/americas/mexico/130115/dozens-killed-wave-violence-mexico).

Days before, several people were demonstrating against the new Mexican president. Around 100 people were arrested that day and until December 28th all of them were released:

"Authorities held the 14 for nearly a month on vague charges of “attacks against the public peace.” The charges carry sentences of up to 30 years in prison and contain ambiguous language that defense attorneys say can allow the government to prosecute dissent as terrorism. While the Inauguration Day protests did result in some property damage, no evidence directly linking those detained to the actual crimes has been made public by the Mexico City government" http://southnotes.org/2012/12/28/remaining-14-inauguration-day-detainees-released/

In the meantime, religious organizations (read Catholics), are pushing the government to change the law so they can profess freely in public, surprisingly the government heard them and tried to change the law assuming and claiming that in the constitution:

"ha quedado prohibido el llamado culto externo. Esta limitación contrasta con el derecho de manifestación con cualquier objeto lícito, que la Constitución concede en el artículo 9o., con la única prevención de que sólo los mexicanos podrán hacerlo para tomar parte en los asuntos políticos del país y siempre sin armas."

TRANSLATION
"has been forbidden the so-called external cult. This limitation contrasts with the right of demonstration with any licit purpose, that the Constitution
grants in the article 9th., assuming that only Mexicans can do it if it is related to the political business of the country and always without weapons"

LESSONS:
1. IN MEXICO WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT FERAL DOGS AND WE CANNOT HAND OUT FLYERS ABOUT THEM. EVEN WORST, TRYING TO PROTECT THEM
2. WE NEED TO ACCEPT THAT AN UNKNOWN ENTITY CALLED "ORGANISED CRIME" IS ALWAYS LURKING AND IS VERY DANGEROUS, EVEN IF THERE ARE NO ARRESTS WE NEED TO TRUST IN OUR GOVERNMENT AND ITS EFFORTS TO PROTECT US AGAINS IT
3. RELIGIOUS PEOPLE CAN DEMONSTRATE ANYTIME, ANYWHERE AND GOVERNMENT WILL TRY TO PROTECT THEM, IF POSSIBLE CHANGING THE LAW
4. POLITICAL DEMONSTRATORS, SPECIALLY AGAINST THE RULLING PARTY, WILL BE PROSECUTED.

Justo...

Project Hail Mary, or: Saving Private Hollywood?

The WEIRD Hollywood society launched a Hail Mary movie into the dead zone of its current crisis, turning a popular hard Sci-Fi book into a never-ending collection of comic relief reels totalling 2.5 hours. And it did not exactly stick the landing. It started innocently enough. When I read the interview Perri Thaler, from Science , did with Wendy Freedman, an astronomer at the University of Chicago, I became genuinely interested in the Project Hail Mary movie. The science sounded fascinating — the kind of premise that makes you feel slightly smarter just for knowing about it. I had not been in a movie theater in a while, and when I started spotting the posters at bus stops and some colleagues mentioned they wanted to go, I joined them. What followed was completely unexpected. But before I get to that, let me dwell for a moment on the title — because, as it turns out, it is something of a foreshadowing. The term "Hail Mary" has two primary meanings: it is a traditional ...
